All About Eve Rated U

All About Eve

Dir. Joseph L. Mankiewicz. USA, 1950. 2h 18m. Starring Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, Hugh Marlowe, Gregory Ratoff, Barbara Bates, Marilyn Monroe.

The tangled story of young actress Eve who enters a small group of people, including a playwright and his wife, a producer and a star. She is befriended by Margo, the star (an older woman) and is then taken on as her secretary. It soon becomes clear, however, that Eve is prepared to act unscrupulously in order to achieve success.

Smart, sophisticated, and devastatingly funny, this Hollywood classic only improves with age. Praised by critics at the time of its release, it was nominated for 14 Academy Awards and won six, including Best Picture.

'Joseph L Mankiewicz's film dissects the narcissism and hypocrisy of the spotlight as sharply as [Billy Wilder's Sunset Blvd], but pays equal attention to the challenges of enacting womanhood.' ★★★★★ Ben Walters, Time Out

'Put simply, one of the greatest movies ever made.' ★★★★★ Anthony Quinn, The Independent
