Mad To Be Normal
Dir. Robert Mullan. UK, 2017. 1h 46m. Starring David Tennant, Elisabeth Moss, Michael Gambon, Gabriel Byrne, David Bamber.
Dubbed the “high priest of anti-psychiatry”, RD Laing was one of the most charismatic and controversial figures of the 1960s counter-culture. He was renowned for experimenting with LSD as a means of treating patients affected by schizophrenia. This film focuses on the foundation of Kingsley Hall as a medication-free community in an experiment which cemented Laing’s reputation as a dangerous radical in the eyes of the medical establishment. David Tennant gives a nuanced performance as the maverick psychiatrist in a film which captures Laing’s intelligence and charm but also his darker side.
This screening will be followed by a special Q&A with the director Robert Mullan and cast members Tom Richards and James Utechin.
