Dir. Denzel Washington. USA, 2016. 2h 19m. Starring Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Jovan Adepo, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Russell Hornsby.
Based on August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Fences focuses on the domestic struggles of Troy Maxson, a black working class father living in Pittsburgh during the 1950s. Troy once dreamed of a baseball career, but was too old when the major leagues began admitting black players. Embittered, and now working as a garbage collector, his relationship with his family becomes more and more strained. Denzel Washington directs and stars in this emotionally poignant drama, but Viola Davis steals the show with her powerful Oscar-winning performance.
'The great coup Washington delivers, beyond framing his co-star's virtuous anguish so well, is the risky, brilliant, and frequently alienating performance he gives as Troy’ ★★★★ Tim Robey, The Telegraph
'Washington is very good, but it's Davis - hurt, proud, determined - who's the star of this show.’’ ★★★★ Dave Calhoun, Time Out
