Moon Rated 15

Dir. Duncan Jones. UK, 2009. 1h 37m. Starring Sam Rockwell, Kevin Spacey, Matt Berry, Robin Chalk, Dominique McElligott, Kaya Scodelario, Malcolm Stewart, Benedict Wong.

Released ten years ago on a (comparatively) minuscule budget, Duncan Jones’s eerie sci-fi debut became an instant cult classic. Set in a future where the energy crisis has been solved by mining fuel from the moon, Sam Rockwell plays the satellites' sole worker. He spends his time fixing failing equipment, bickering with his AI companion, and speaking to his family back home – until he unearths a terrible truth with existentially catastrophic implications.

A Science Oxford Q&A with Prof Chris Lintott (Professor of Astrophysics in the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford and presenter of the BBC series The Sky at Night) follows this screening.

‘With its measured pacing, melancholy tone and eye for prosaic details, Moon is very different from the glossy sci-fi blockbuster - and far more satisfying.’ ★★★★ Wendy Ide, The Times
