The Holy Mountain

Dir. Arnold Fanck. Germany, 1926. 1h 45m. Starring Leni Riefenstahl, Ernst Petersen, Frida Richard, Luis Trenker, Friedrich Schneider.

The bergfilme – or mountain film – was a staple of Weimar cinema, linking melodrama with extreme location shooting, and reflecting an increasing national obsession with exercise and fitness. Arnold Fanck was the genre’s master, and his greatest star – dancer Leni Reifenstahl - went on to find a notorious place of her own in German cinema.

‘It can take its place as a minor classic of the German silent cinema’ James Hoberman, The New York Times
