Viceroy’s House Rated 12A

Viceroy’s House

Dir. Gurinder Chadha. UK, 2017. 1h 46m. Starring Gillian Anderson, Hugh Bonneville, Michael Gambon, Om Puri Manish Dayal, Simon Callow, Huma Qureshi.

Set in the Mountbatten’s house during the dying days of the Raj, political manoeuvring and sectarian in-fighting creates havoc in Indian society. Upstairs, politicians argue about the partition of a nation, whilst downstairs a romance blossoms between a Hindu and a Muslim servant. A moving and personal political drama written and directed by Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham).

'This is easily Chadha's most ambitious film to date, and her best in a long time.' Tim Robey, The Telegraph

'Chadha ... has set out to make a personal-political drama with a solidly populist edge, a bold ambition for which deserves three cheers.' Mark Kermode, The Guardian
