White Riot

Dir. Rubika Shah. UK, 2019. 1h 21m. Starring Red Saunders, Dennis Bovell, Mykaell Riley, Pervez Bilgrami, Pauline Black, Ruth Gregory.

Rock Against Racism was formed in 1976, prompted by Eric Clapton and his vocal support of racist MP Enoch Powell. The campaign grew from Hoxton fanzine roots to 1978’s huge antifascist carnival in Victoria Park, featuring X-Ray Spex, Steel Pulse and The Clash. This electrifying documentary charts a vital national protest movement and won Best Documentary at the BFI London Film Festival 2019.

On Thursday 22 October, Oxford Love Music Hate Racism and Oxford Stand Up To Racism are hosting an online panel discussion including Rock Against Racism co-founder Roger Huddle who features in the film. For more information, visit the Facebook Event page here.

‘An excellent brief documentary about a heroic grassroots political movement whose importance reveals itself more clearly in retrospect with every year that passes.’ ★★★★ Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

“Gets to the heart of what it means to be anti-racist, and the tunes ain’t half bad either. It’s a cliché to describe a film as “essential viewing”, but this really is.’ ★★★★ Adam Woodward, Little White Lies
