RD LAING DRAMA MAD TO BE NORMAL + PANEL DISCUSSION WITH DIRECTOR & CAST / 12 APRIL
Posted: Sun 1 Jan
The first English screening of RD Laing drama Mad To Be Normal, starring David Tennant, has been confirmed at The Ultimate Picture Palace on Wednesday 12 April. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the director Robert Mullan and cast members Tom Richards and James Utechin.
Dubbed the “high priest of anti-psychiatry”, RD Laing was one of the most charismatic and controversial figures of the 1960s counter-culture. He was renowned for experimenting with LSD as a means of treating patients affected by schizophrenia. This film focuses on the foundation of Kingsley Hall as a medication-free community in an experiment which cemented Laing’s reputation as a dangerous radical in the eyes of the medical establishment.
David Tennant gives a nuanced performance as the maverick psychiatrist in a film which captures Laing’s intelligence and charm but also his darker side. The film also stars Elisabeth Moss, Michael Gambon, and Gabriel Byrne.
